Statement of responsibility: edited by Bernd Scheffer, Christine Stenzer, Peter Weibel, and Soenke Zehle
No other medium sets type in motion the way film does: whether artistic film, feature film, commercial, or music video, the Schriftfilm was established during the pioneering days of film in the late nineteenth century, and has since expanded into a diverse genre of its own. Through the enmeshment of writing and the moving image, the lead type from the early days of printing has found its way onto twenty-first century screens. Through a wide range of analogue and digital processes, type in motion has continued to evolve into a multifaceted aesthetic practice. Lettering is not simply used to convey information, but has gained an autonomous status in filmic forms of artistic expression and reflection. This edition focuses mainly on the artistic Schriftfilm, and presents examples of analogue and digital films in which animated and designed writing, sometimes set to music, is the main character, a role that goes far beyond what is conventionally expected of type and type in film.
